Jean F. Coppola, Associate Professor of Information Technology and Director of the Pace University Gerontechnology Program

Jean is a graduate of St. Francis Prep's Class of 1982 and her nationally recognized collaborative and multidisciplinary research team study older adults, computing, and what happens when the Internet Age and the Golden Age collide.  (Gerontechnology is an interdisciplinary field of scientific research in which technology is directed towards the aspirations and opportunities for the older persons.)

In 2005, several NY agencies (Pace University, Westchester Community College (WCC), United Hebrew (UH), Westchester County Department of Senior Programs and Services (DSPS), and Westchester Public / Private Partnership for Aging Services) joined together, through the Westchester Alliance of Academic Institutions for Aging Related Studies and Workforce Development, to plan a timely and innovative multi-faceted gerontechnology research program.

Undergraduate students enrolled in an intergenerational service-learning computing course were specially trained to provide technology instruction to older adults living in independent living, assisted living, and nursing home facilities at (UH). Older adult curriculum included basic computing skills encompassing, psycho-motor skills, assistive software, and brain-games.   The project goes beyond simply having students volunteer to help the elderly. The students receive theory and training specifically for teaching technology to the elderly.

A recent review of Professor Jean Coppola's Gerontechnology Program by an International Data Group (IDG) panel has resulted in Pace being named a 2012 Computerworld Honors Laureate. This honor recognizes organizations and individuals that have developed innovative applications of information technology to promote positive social, economic, and educational change.

Jean has published/co-authored more 12 publications.
