On Sunday, November 4th, alumni, family and friends gathered at the Prep for the blessing of the latest additions of memorial bricks and benches on the Pathway to St. Francis in conjunction with the Annual Alumni Memorial Mass and Brunch.
“It is the tradition of the Catholic Church to celebrate a Mass of Remembrance on the first weekend of November”, SFP's Alumni Director Bro. Robert Kent, O.S.F., told guests who gathered outside the Bro. Ralph Clifford Auditorium as they waited for Mass to begin.
Prior to the start of Mass and the "Blessing of the Bricks" which were both presided over by Prep Chaplain, Father Bill Sweeney, the school's Principal, Bro. Leonard Conway, O.S.F., hosted a brief ceremony where student recipients of three scholarships, their families and benefactors gathered as:
  • Paulette and Vincent A. Toscano '53 presented Stephanie Bayron '11 with the award from the scholarship fund established in their name, thereby insuring that a freshman, sophomore, junior and senior student at Prep (at least one student from each class) will be a holder of this scholarship in perpetuity;
  • Former Track Coach Jim McHugh and the organizers of The James and Bernice McHugh Scholarship Fund (including Ed Kennedy '57 and Dan Corry '58) presented Josh Kim '08, a football and track athlete at Prep, with the inaugural award;
  • Dr. and Mrs. Sheldon Lewis made a special award presentation to Richa Vohra '08 on behalf of the Giulia Lewis Memorial Student Sponsorship Program.
Altogether, more than 500 alumni, friends and family members gathered at this event which included a touching liturgy that honored the memories of all members of the Prep community who passed away over the last twelve months. Alumni Board President, Wally Bishop '80, and former President, Gerry Scales '76, read each name as family members processed down the center isle of the auditorium and placed candles at the altar in remembrance of their loved one.
Following Mass, family and friends of alumni student athletes, Marcin Kielar ‘97, William McCarthy ‘04, Michael Lynch ‘86, Daniel Pujdak ‘01 and James Prevete ‘00 attended the “Raising of Memorial Banners” in the gym as yet another tribute to those Terriers who have passed away--many at very young ages. After the ceremonies, guests gathered in the cafeteria for brunch.
Prep's Principal, Bro. Leonard Conway, O.S.F., who has been recovering from intestinal surgery, participated in the day's events and greeted alumni, families and friends while offering words of encouragement to everyone. This is Brother Leonard's 25th Year as Principal of the Prep.
